5 Signs Your Website Is Losing You Customers
5 Signs Your Website Is Losing You Customers
Your website does not have to be fancy to do its job. It has to be clear, fast, and easy to act on.
That is where a lot of small business sites in Carson City, Reno, and across Northern Nevada quietly lose work. The business is good. The referrals are solid. But when a new customer checks the website before calling, something on the page gives them a reason to try the next business instead. Nobody emails to say, "I was going to hire you, but your website changed my mind." They just move on.
Here are five signs your website may be costing you customers, and how to check each one yourself.
1. It is hard to use on a phone
Pull up your own website on your phone, not on your office computer. That is how most of your customers will see it first — in a parking lot in Carson City, in a kitchen in Sparks, or pulled over trying to find a phone number fast.
Can you read the text without pinching and zooming? Do buttons tap cleanly? Does the page load, or do you sit there waiting? If it frustrates you, it frustrates them — except they have a list of competitors one tap back.
Fix it: test your homepage and your contact page on a phone on a regular connection, not just office Wi-Fi. If text is too small, pages jump around as they load, or key buttons are hard to tap, that is not a minor cosmetic issue. That is the front door sticking shut.
2. A ready customer cannot tell how to contact you in a few seconds
This is the most expensive simple problem I see. Someone is ready to call, book, or get a quote — and the website makes them hunt for how.
Common versions: no phone number until the bottom of the page, an old number still listed, or a contact form that looks fine but never delivers the message. The customer thinks they reached out. You never hear about it. Imagine a homeowner in Gardnerville with a leak, or a driver in Reno who needs work done this week. They are looking for one thing: "Can I reach a real person, right now, in one tap?"
Fix it: put your phone number at the top of the site and make it tap-to-call on phones. Put the same number on your contact page, in the footer, and on your Google Business Profile — and make sure it is the same number everywhere. Then test your own form. Fill it out completely and confirm the message actually arrives where you expect it. Do that test more than once a year.
3. It looks out of date, so people assume the business is too
Customers judge what is in front of them. Old hours, photos that no longer look like your business, services you no longer offer, or a special that ended long ago all send the same message: nobody is minding this. That matters for a salon in Minden, a contractor serving Carson City and Dayton, or a shop on South Carson Street that changed hours. If the hours are wrong, a customer will trust the website and not show up, or show up to a locked door.
Fix it: read every page like a first-time customer. Check hours, address, phone, services, and any prices or offers word for word. Remove anything that is no longer true. Add a few recent, real photos of your work and your location. A site does not need constant blog posts to look alive. It needs to be accurate and current.
4. It talks about your business, but not about the customer's problem
A lot of websites open with a long company history and a list of everything the business has ever done. The customer came with a specific problem: a roof that leaks, a car that will not start, a yard that needs help. If they have to dig to find whether you do the one thing they need, where you do it, and what happens next, many will not dig.
Fix it: your homepage should say, in plain language, what you do, who you do it for, and where you work — Carson City, Reno, Sparks, Minden, Gardnerville, Dayton, or wherever you actually serve. Give each main service its own clear section or page. End each one with one clear next step: call, book, or request a quote. One clear next step beats five competing buttons.
5. There is no proof, and no reason to trust you over the next listing
When two businesses look similar, customers look for proof: reviews, real photos, examples of recent work, and straight answers to common questions. A site with no reviews, no real work photos, and vague promises gives them nothing to hold onto. Specific, checkable proof helps: what the job was, where it was, and what the customer said afterward. Broken links do quiet damage too — a customer who clicks from Google and hits a dead page does not go hunting for the right one. They leave.
Fix it: put a small number of real reviews where customers can actually see them, and keep asking for reviews after a job goes well so they stay current. Add real work photos — not just stock images. Click every main link and button on your site, especially from Google and from your Google Business Profile, and fix anything that leads nowhere.
A quick check you can do in 15 minutes
- Open your site on your phone. Can you read it, tap the buttons, and call in one tap?
- Time how you would contact yourself as a new customer. If it takes hunting, it is too slow.
- Check hours, address, phone, services, and prices against what is true today.
- Read your homepage out loud. Does it say what you do, where, and what to do next, in the first screen or two?
- Submit your own contact form and confirm it arrives.
- Click your website link from Google Search and Google Maps. Does it land on a working page that matches your profile information?
If you found one issue, fix that one first — especially contact problems and wrong information. Those lose ready-to-buy customers today. If you found three or more, the site probably does not need one more patch. It needs a proper cleanup or a rebuild, with the basics done right before anything fancy is added.
A good website for a local business is not about impressing other businesses. It is about not giving a ready customer a reason to leave.
